Data Consumption for Video And Gps Devices

Data Consumption for Video And Gps Devices

Video Devices

This article outlines the expected mobile data usage for video-enabled devices (MDVRs, dashcams, multi-channel video recorders)  and data comparison with trackers

1. What is the average consumption of data per video device?

✅ On average, a video device consumes around 400–500 MB per month.

 2. What is the minimum data usage we expect?

✅ The minimum expected consumption is around 300 MB per month, assuming normal GPS reporting and minimal remote video access.

 3. What is the maximum data usage a video device can consume?

✅ In most cases, video devices use a maximum of around 750 MB per month.
⚠️ Note: A few units with issues (misconfiguration, repeated retransmission, or excessive live viewing) may exceed this value.

 Key Notes for Video Devices

  • Live streaming and remote playback increase data consumption significantly.

  • Alarm video snapshots also add to usage if enabled.

  • If video streaming is disabled, usage stays closer to the average (400–500 MB).

  • If video streaming is used frequently, consumption may exceed 1 GB.

Troubleshooting High Data Usage

If a video device consumes more than expected:

  1. Check configuration – Verify GPS reporting interval and video alarm linkage.

  2. Review platform usage – Confirm how often live streaming/playback is requested.

  3. Inspect device logs – Look for repeated uploads (looping alarms, corrupted files).

  4. Update firmware – Ensure the device is on the latest stable version.

Data Consumption Comparison: GPS vs. High-Report GPS vs. Video Devices

Minimum (MB)

Average (MB)

Maximum (MB)

Notes

Standard GPS Tracker

~30–50 MB

~60–100 MB

~150 MB

Low usage. Location + telemetry only (every 30–60s).

High-Report GPS Device

~120 MB

~150–250 MB

~300–400 MB

Sends frequent reports (every 5–10s). Can be 3–5× higher than standard GPS.

Video Device (MDVR/Dashcam)

~300 MB

~400–500 MB

~750 MB (up to 1GB with streaming)

Includes GPS + snapshots + alarm video + optional live video stream.
