How to set up Trip classification/categorization.

Trip classification is the process of categorising vehicle journeys into specific purposes such as Business, Commute, Personal, or Unclassified, based on factors like time of day, day of the week, trip origin/destination, or company rules.

This helps organisations and drivers:

  • Separate work and personal use of vehicles.

  • Simplify expense reporting and reimbursements.

  • Support tax compliance where business vs. personal mileage must be tracked.

  • Improve reporting accuracy in fleet management platform.

Enabling Auto Classify Trips
  1. Go to Client Settings >>Asset settings> Auto Classify Trips

2. Configuring Time Rules

. Then select the classification criterion
  • Off → No automatic classification.

  • By time of day → Apply time-based rules (recommended).  You can configure whether the rules apply to the trip start time or trip end time.

3. Click Configure Time Rules to set when trips should be marked as Business, Commute, or Personal.

  • Business (Green) → Typical office hours or work-related travel.

  • Commute (Yellow) → Travel to and from work (usually morning and evening).

  • Personal (Blue) → Non-work trips such as shopping, leisure, or errands.

  • Unclassified/Off (White) → Trips outside defined times remain uncategorized.
